Produced in June and July in Florence, Italy in 2007 at the Santa Reparata printmaking studio. “Ars de Geometria” refers to an approach to art during the Late Medieval and Early Renaissance periods where artisan utilized symmetry of mathematical and geometric forms to derive a understanding or deeper meaning of the natural world they were attempting to represent.
Each image is a unique non-editioned woodblock print. For each piece I’ve incorporated multiple hand carved woodblocks each consisting of a single simple, and occasionally not so simple, geometric pattern. The printing process consists of the inking of a carved woodblock and transferring or making an inked impression of that block onto a sheet of Japanese paper. This process is repeated, each time overlaying a different colored cut block pattern on top of the previously inked impression. The process allows me to explore the colors, textures and patterns that is the unique and subtle language of the woodblock print.
